Myanmar’s parallel administration, the National Unity Government (NUG), announced on September 5 that the Myanmar military regime led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has been designated an Enemy of the State.

The NUG said that the military regime is designated as the Enemy of the State because it is working toward the total destruction of Myanmar and damaging national security and defence.

The NUG continued that the military regime is committing actions that harm the interests of the people in the realms of politics, economy, public health, education and human rights, and with respect to the dignity of the nation.

The NUG statement indicated that acts of collaboration and support for the military regime are now considered criminal acts of breach of trust against the state and the people, and constitute support for committing war crimes.

The NUG urged the people as a whole to fight against the military regime’s orders in every way.

The NUG called on neighbouring countries including ASEAN nations as well as UN member countries that want peace and stability in Myanmar to take effective and severe action against the military regime.

The increasingly beleaguered military regime is committing war crimes with growing frequency, including targeting civilians in towns, villages, and displacement camps with various small arms and heavy weapons fire, and using air power to bomb and attack civilian targets.

The military regime’s crimes are flagrant violations of international military law and human rights laws, which are serious war crimes that must be prosecuted before international courts, the NUG said.

From the military coup on February 1, 2021, to September 4, 2024, more than 5,600 people were killed by the regime, according to a report compiled by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

The military regime and junta-affiliated groups torched 95,450 civilian houses over the past three-plus years from February 1, 2021, to June 30, 2024, Data for Myanmar reported in July.
