At least 10 civilian casualties were reported in junta airstrikes on two villages in Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township on Tuesday morning, according to local people.
Ma Pan Ei Phyu, a 22-year-old woman from Maungdaw sheltering in Shwebaho Village, was killed on the spot and six civilians including her father U Kyaw Thein Khaing were injured in the junta air assault.
The injured are U Kyaw Nyunt Phyu, 71, from Shwebaho Village, May Thazin Tun, 29, U Kyaw Kyaw Naing, 29, U Phyu Tun, 62, Maung Naing Thuta Phyo, 5, and U Kyaw Thein Khaing from Maungdaw.
“The regime carried out an airstrike on the village while locals were sleeping. A junta jet fighter dropped two bombs on the village. It is known that there are more injured people. At the moment, we do not know exactly [how many],” said a local resident in Maungdaw.
Ma Pan Ei Phyu was a member of the Maungdaw Youth affairs Network (MYAN) and had taken refuge in Shwebaho Village together with her family.
Ko Sein Than Maung, 28, U Maung Sein Hla, 50, Ko Tun Naing Soe, 24, and Daw Shwe Phyu Than, 42, were injured in a junta air attack on Bawdigon Village in Maungdaw Township on Tuesday morning.
The Arakkha Army (AA) has said that the regime, which is losing the war in Arakan State against the ethnic armed group, is targeting civilians who have nothing to do with the conflict, and in doing so has committed mass murder.
All told, the regime launched airstrikes on three different villages in Maungdaw Township on the morning of May 21, according to local people.
“I want to say that the regime has deliberately targeted civilian villages with airstrikes. The regime is angry at losing the war and is only attacking civilians, so they have been killed and injured,” said another resident in Maungdaw.
The injured people are being treated at nearby hospitals and their conditions are considered life-threatening.
A junta airstrike on Kinchaung Village, Maungdaw Township, killed three people and wounded five others on May 14. Two civilians were wounded in a regime air assault on Thayay Konbaung Village in Maungdaw Township on May 15.
