At least three civilians were killed and nine others were injured in a junta attack on Hsinkhaung Village, part of Arakan State’s Thandwe Township, on June 3.
The civilian casualties were reported due to a regime airstrike and Myanmar Navy shelling on Hsinkhaung Village without any fighting between junta and Arakkha Army (AA) forces occurring in the area, local residents said.
“The military’s Y-12 jet fighters dropped several bombs on the village. Three women were killed and nine others were wounded in the junta artillery attack yesterday. It is difficult to explain the details. The clashes continued to intensify this morning,” said a displaced woman from Hsinkhaung Village.
Many residents of Hsinkhaung Village have fled following the regime’s airstrikes and shellings. Several homes and a school were damaged in the junta attack.
Residents say the regime, which has suffered consequential territorial losses due to an ongoing AA offensive, is attempting to instil fear in the people of Thandwe Township in an effort to dissuade them from supporting the ethnic armed group.
“The residents of Hsinkhaung Village make a living by fishing. The regime is taking advantage of the fighting and committing war crimes as if it has a licence to kill civilians,” said a social activist in Thandwe.
The AA has been clashing with the military near Got Village, about two miles from Ngapali Town, since 4 p.m. on Sunday, with hostilities continuing to escalate on Wednesday.
The theatre of conflict between the Myanmar military and AA in southern Arakan State, which began near Kwaychaung and Yaysin villages, has verged on Thandwe Town in recent days.
