The Myanmar military clashed with the Arakkha Army (AA) in Gwa Township, Arakan State, on August 8, according to local residents.
The clash between the military and AA followed after the ethnic armed group launched an offensive attack on a junta camp near Chinkwin Village, about 26 miles from Gwa, on Thursday.
About 70 junta soldiers retreated from the military camp on August 10 due to the AA’s attack, said a military source.
“The fighting between the military and AA has been going on for three days. The junta camp near Chinkwin Village is a small military outpost,” the military source said.
The regime responded to the AA attacks with aerial and artillery support from military regiments in Gwa, according to locals.
Thousands of local people from some villages near the scene of fighting have reportedly fled to safer locations.
“It is true that the fighting between the military and AA is ongoing. However, the battle is far away from Gwa, so there is no impact on the town at the moment,” said a resident of Gwa.
Nonetheless fighting has erupted in Gwa Township for the first time since the latest hostilities began in Arakan State on November 13, 2023.
Locals are worried about the potential escalation of fighting in Gwa Township following the clash and military tensions in the area.
The regime has reportedly bolstered a defence near Kyeintali Town on the Thandwe-Gwa road, increased its military presence in the area, and made preparations to defend against the AA’s anticipated advances on the township, according to locals.
