More than 110,000 people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in Arakan State since January, according to the state’s Department of Public Health (DPH).
The vaccines were donated by India and China, according to Dr. Soe Win Paing, assistant director of the Arakan State DPH.
“There are more than 180,000 virus vaccines donated by India. Only 4,000 people have been vaccinated against the virus by the vaccine donated by China,” he told DMG. “We are currently vaccinating just over a thousand people [per day]. More than 3,000 virus vaccines are designated to be given to educators.”
Of those vaccinated, four have been diagnosed with the virus since their inoculation, according to the Arakan State DPH.
As of Thursday, 619 coronavirus cases were reported in Arakan State during the ongoing third wave of the pandemic, with six deaths attributed to the disease.
A total of 3,947 new cases and 57 Covid-related deaths were reported nationwide on July 7, according to Myanmar’s Ministry of Health and Sports.
Beginning with an uptick in cases nationally toward the end of May, Myanmar has been grappling with a third wave of coronavirus infections that threatens to dwarf the previous two. Other countries in the region are facing similar surges.
