A 17-year-old woman was injured by shrapnel when a Myanmar junta artillery shell hit the staff-quarters of a public hospital in Chin State’s Paletwa town on Friday.
Light Infantry Battalion No. 289 based in Paletwa was responsible for the artillery strike. Ma Daewi Tun, the daughter of a hospital employee, was injured.
“Battalion 289 had been firing since the morning. A shell landed at the staff-quarters on the compound of the hospital around 10 a.m. She suffered a minor injury to her leg,” said a Paletwa resident.
The battalion fired more than 10 shells from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Friday, according to locals.
Residents are in a state of panic following the incident. “People have greater concerns after the daughter of a hospital employee was hit. All the shops have shut down and people stay in their houses,” said a resident.
At least four civilians have been killed and 13 others have been injured by junta air and artillery strikes in Paletwa Township during the latest fighting.
The Arakan Army (AA) launched attacks on junta tactical command bases in Taron Eain and Nonebu villages in Paletwa Township on November 14. The ethnic armed group seized Taron Eain base on December 4, and continues to attack Nonebu base.
Paletwa Township is facing food shortages and price hikes due to the junta’s blockading of roads and waterways.
