The murder of an assistant teacher from Arakan State’s Rathedaung Township is being carefully investigated to unearth the truth behind what happened the day she was killed, according to U Khaing Thukha, spokesman for the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA).
U Khaing Thukha told DMG that witnesses in the case, as well as suspects, are being questioned.
“So far, we have not been able to identify who the culprit is. We have not yet received any evidence that can tell us the status of the case. The case is being investigated,” he said.
One of two suspects being investigated is Ko Maung Maung Aye from Kyunpaw Pauktaw Village, U Khaing Thukha said, though the ULA/AA spokesman did not disclose the identity of the other. Ko Maung Maung Aye escaped ULA/AA custody on the night of September 19 when ULA/AA personnel were taking him in for interrogation, but he was recaptured on September 26.
The victim has been identified as Daw Hnin Yu Nwe, a 37-year-old female junior assistant teacher from Kyunpaw Pauktaw Village in Rathedaung Township. She is believed to have been killed while on her way to Panphawpyin Village from Pauktaw Village on the morning of September 16.
The ULA/AA detained a total of 12 local people from Kyunpaw Pauktaw Village, including four women and a male teacher, for questioning in connection with the case on October 1 and 2.
“We have no contact with those detained by the AA. They were arrested four days ago. We want the AA to identify the perpetrators as soon as possible,” said U Maung Kyaw Yi, the administrator of Kyuntaw Pauktaw Village.
Family members of the victim, local residents, the education community and the Arakan Students Union are calling for swift identification of the perpetrator or perpetrators.
“Now it’s approaching one month since she died, but the perpetrator has not yet been identified. Thus, I am worried that the case will disappear because the perpetrator cannot be identified,” said Daw Hmne Ni, a family member of Daw Hnin Yu Nwe.
