Basic education schools in Paletwa Township, Chin State, reopened on June 23 after being temporarily closed due to local COVID-19 infection rates, according to the township education office.
U Min Lite, deputy township education officer for Paletwa Township, said as infection rates appeared to be in decline, schools would be reopened for students to catch up on their lessons.
“All schools will be reopened starting from today,” he said on Wednesday. “Responsible people from the education, health and administration departments held a meeting and made a decision, and submitted a letter to the State Administration Council yesterday. With the council’s approval, schools will be reopened starting from today. An announcement has also been issued.”
U Min Lite added that students would be taught on weekends to catch up on lessons missed during the period of school closures.
“We want students’ education not to be delayed,” said Paletwa Township Administrator U Zaw Lin. “They have ambition. For example, to pass the matriculation exam at age 15, graduate from university at age 20, then enter the workforce, etc. So, we want to reopen schools quickly for them.”
As the Ministry of Health and Sports sought to reduce the infection rate by limiting public gatherings in Paletwa Township, schools were temporarily closed on June 9.
