A series of regime airstrikes on Mrauk-U and Ponnagyun townships in Arakan State on April 19 left civilian casualties and destroyed residential buildings.
The attack, carried out by three jet fighters around 10:00 a.m., targeted Ponnagyun town, where bombs hit and damaged a sub-power station and several homes.
In Mrauk-U Township, the regime conducted two separate airstrikes on Kyaukselpyin Village, the first around 10:00 a.m. and a second at approximately 12:30 p.m.
Local residents reported that the village monastery was destroyed by fire during the attack, and a 23-year-old man identified as Ko Htay Win sustained injuries.
Ko Pyae Phyo Naing, chairman of the Ponnagyun Youths Association, stated that in addition to the power station, the bombing in Ponnagyun destroyed 10 houses, a Border Areas and National Races Development school, and sections of the main road.
“Residents are extremely worried as more than 10 bombs were dropped. At the moment, there are not many casualties, but there is significant property damage,” he said.
The regime also bombed Yayphyukan Village in Ponnagyun Township. The bombs landed near the village bridge, though no injuries were reported.
Concerns over safety are mounting among locals as the regime intensifies its aerial campaign against areas controlled by the Arakan Army across Arakan State.
Writer Wai Hun Aung, who is assisting internally displaced persons, said, “The Arakanese people need to be more vigilant about the danger of airstrikes. Since the regime's aerial attacks have become more frequent, I want to urge everyone not to be careless and to take great care.”
Since the beginning of this year, the regime has been exerting military pressure on Arakan State through increased airstrikes, often deploying groups of at least three aircraft to drop numerous bombs.
