At least 64 civilians were killed by unprovoked junta attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday in Sin Kaung Village, part of Arakan State’s Thandwe Township, according to residents.
The regime carried out bombing raids and field and naval artillery strikes.
“Villagers said 64 victims were buried as of Thursday. The regime mainly attacked two sections of Sin Kaung Village,” said a person who went to the village in the aftermath of the strikes.
Among the victims were children, the elderly, middle-aged women, education staff and migrant workers.
Sin Kaung is a fishing village of more than 400 households. People from northern Arakan State also commonly work there and make up most of the aforementioned migrant workers.
Residents estimate that around 100 villagers may have been killed in the attacks. DMG was unable to ascertain the exact number of fatalities as communications were down.
A social activist from Thandwe Township said: “The attacks were made in response to informants telling the regime that people in Sin Kaung support the AA. They are fishermen. They don’t have any weapons. The regime has deliberately committed war crimes to instil fear in people so that people dare not support the AA.”
The surviving Sin Kaung villagers have fled, fearing further junta strikes, and they need food and shelter.
About 100 civilians have been confirmed killed in junta attacks against civilian populations in Arakan State since June 1. On top of that, at least 76 people were killed in a junta massacre late last month in Byaing Phyu Village, Sittwe Township.
