Several Tabebuia trees planted by the Myebon Youth Association along the entrance road to Myebon town were destroyed for a second time, Ko Si Thu Win, the association’s external relations officer, told DMG.
About 40 of the trees were planted at the entrance of the town and more than 10 were damaged or destroyed in recent days, along with some related fencing.
“We hadn’t seen the Tabebuia plants in about a week, so yesterday we went and saw that the plants had been destroyed. We planted trees along the entrance to the town to welcome visitors, but we were very saddened by the destruction of the trees,” he said on Saturday.
The Tabebuia trees were replanted this year with the help of donors after all of the trees from a first planting were destroyed in July 2020, according to the Myebon Youth Association.
U Saw Htwe Aung, a resident of Myebon town, said efforts should be made to find and take action against those who destroyed the trees.
“The Tazaungdaing festival was celebrated in the past few days, so I think the young people drank and destroyed the trees unintentionally. But that should not be the case. In this regard, we will issue a letter to the public not to destroy the trees,” he added.
Tabebuia is a flowering tree native to parts of Central and South America.
Tabebuia trees are being cultivated for urban beautification in Arakan State, and similar destruction has taken place in some other townships.
