A teenage suspect has been arrested and three men are still at large in a case involving the killing of a General Administration Department (GAD) employee in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, according to the Maungdaw Myoma police station.

Nobi Hussain, a 14-year-old resident of Myoma Anauk ward in Maungdaw town, was detained and a man named Isamile and other two men are on the run, said Police Captain Myint Kyaw Oo, head of the Maungdaw Myoma police station.

“A suspect who was involved in the murder has been arrested. He said that Isamile asked for him to accompany him. Isamile and the other two Muslim men are on the run. However, their families are also being investigated to enable us to arrest them,” the police officer told DMG.

Ko San Htay Naing, a clerk for the Myinlut town GAD in Maungdaw Township, was found dead near a jetty in Maungdaw town with his throat slit and bruises on his face on the morning of December 23. A case has been opened under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which covers murder.

According to the police report, Nobi Hussain said Ko San Htay Naing had an argument with Isamile from Fayzi village on December 22 over a debt that was owed, and Nobi Hussain was subsequently involved in the killing of the GAD clerk, along with Isamile and two other men whose names are not known.

A Redmi brand mobile phone with the victim’s fingerprints on it and a pair of blood-stained blue jeans and shirt were found at Nobi Hussain’s home, police said.

In a statement on December 17, the United League of Arakan (ULA) — the Arakan Army’s political wing — said that some townships in Arakan State had experienced a “series of extraordinary events” this month that it warned could lead to sectarian conflict.
