Myanmar’s military regime has banned fireworks and firecrackers during the Thadingyut festival in all 17 of Arakan State’s townships, according to ward and village administrators.
The regime on Thursday told ward and village administrators to “shout out” the warning in their respective wards and villages.
“We notified the villagers yesterday,” said U Oo Khin Maung, a clerk of the village administration office in Rathedaung Township’s Zedi Pyin Village.
The regime policy bans the shooting of fireworks and firecrackers, saying these activities could cause public panic, and that unscrupulous persons could use fireworks and firecrackers as a cover to commit acts detrimental to community peace, tranquillity and security.
The selling and shooting of fireworks and firecrackers is punishable under Section 188 of the Penal Code, according to the notice.
“At this time in previous years, [administrators] would shout that we can’t shoot fireworks and firecrackers. But I haven’t heard them shout like that this year,” said Daw Aye Khaing Nu from Setkhaw Village in Buthidaung Township.
The ban will be in effect until November 28. Since fighting erupted between the Arakan Army and Myanmar military in late 2018, the military has warned against shooting off fireworks and firecrackers every year as the Thadingyut holiday approached.
