A female student of electrical engineering at Dawei Technological University in Tanintharyi Region was arrested by junta forces on December 10, according to the Dawei Technological University Students’ Union.
Ma Zizawar Hlaing, a fifth year student at the university, was arrested at her home at 11 a.m. on Friday, a source close to her told DMG.
“My friend was forcibly arrested by a large group of soldiers. The students’ union is seeking to release her from detention,” the source said.
A total of 15 students from Dawei Technological University have been arrested by the regime council, 10 of whom were subsequently released while the other five are facing trial on charges under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code, an incitement provision.
Students and student unions across the country have been at the forefront of resistance to Myanmar’s military regime, which seized power in a February 1 coup.
In May, the Arakan Students Union (Universities – Yangon) released a statement urging university students in Yangon Region to boycott the education system under junta rule.
