One man was killed and another was seriously injured when unexploded ordnance (UXO) went off in Arakan State’s Buthidaung Township on Sunday, according to local residents.
The fatality was identified as an 18-year-old Muslim man from Thein Taung Pyin village, while a 20-year-old Muslim man from Doe Tan village was injured in his right arm and shoulder after the UXO encounter on their way to Mayu Mountain, according to relatives.
“They always go there to chop firewood. They stepped on a bomb as they went there yesterday. One died while being sent to Buthidaung Hospital, and another is receiving treatment at the hospital,” said a family member.
There is a military outpost located near where the explosion occurred, according to a relative. The pair are from impoverished families and do odd jobs to make a living.
Several people in Arakan State who rely on the forests and mountains for their livelihoods have died or been injured by explosive remnants of war in recent months and years.
Over the course of some two years of fighting between Myanmar’s military and the Arakan Army from late 2018 to November 2020, more than 70 people were killed and over 100 people were injured in UXO incidents.
