Forty-one women died and 27 others were injured at the hands of Myanmar’s military regime during the period from May 1 to 27, the Burmese Women’s Union (BWU) said in a report released on Saturday. Most of the victims were from Sagaing Region.
The majority of victims were killed by artillery strikes, bombing raids, landmine explosions or were raped by junta forces, said the BWU’s statement on June 1.
Of 11 regions and states, Sagaing Region ranked first with nine women deaths, followed by eight in Magway Region and seven in Arakan State, according to the report.
“As the regime is increasingly targeting innocent people, it is becoming increasingly important for people to be vigilant,” said a female social activist in Arakan State.
In areas affected by military conflict, women are among the most vulnerable to the consequences of war, including lack of psychological and physical security, and health and livelihood challenges.
The number of civilian deaths and injuries is increasing on a monthly basis in Arakan State, where hostilities between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) continue to escalate, and among the victims are many women and children.
“The number of women killed and injured during the war made me sad. Women are already losing their opportunities, and now it’s even worse. Security should be created for the women and family members who have suffered such harm,” said a women’s rights activist in Arakan State.
At least 35 women were killed or injured in junta airstrikes, firings, artillery strikes and landmine blasts in Arakan State in May.
