Following the incessant rainfall, the Sin Baw Kaing refugee camp located at the bank of the Lay Myo River has been submerged which affects IDPs living in over 400 tents in the camp. They urgently need to be evacuated to alternative locations.

The Indian government is going to provide USD 25 million within five years for resettlement of returnees and socio-economic development in Arakan State, Indian ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Shri Saurabh Kumar said.

“Water seeps into the villages, and the water level is now three to six feet high. Since we are cut off from Internet access, we could not post about the flooding in our villages on social media,” said administrator of Ohe Pyin Taung village.

It has now been twenty days since the Internet has been cut off in eight townships of Arakan State. It’s not known if the government has any intention to lift the ban.  

Since ongoing armed conflicts between the Tatmadaw and the AA continue in Arakan State, political parties and other organizations are concerned if the 2020 election can be held in the region.

About 700 IDPs from Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U Townships are facing health problems as a result of ongoing fighting between the Tatmadaw and the AA in Arakan State, the Rakhine Ethnics Congress released a statement on 9 July.

The flood was caused by a poor sanitation system, blocked drainage outlets, heavy water flow from the mountain and the drying up of creeks, said U San Ngwe, the chairman of Taungoke township municipal committee.
