Residents of Kyauknimaw Village in Ramree Township, Arakan State, continue to struggle with recovery after heavy losses and widespread destruction caused by a Myanmar military airstrike.

On January 8, 2025, the military conducted an aerial bombardment on Kyauknimaw Village, killing at least 26 people, injuring more than 12 others, and destroying around 400 homes by fire, according to local residents.

The village, which is made up of 11 wards including southern, northern and central areas, saw homes in Muslim-inhabited wards burned to the ground during the attack.

The strike left about 400 households and more than 2,000 people homeless. Many residents say they have been unable to rebuild their homes after losing nearly all their possessions.

Although Kyauknimaw residents mainly depend on fishing for their livelihoods, they say ongoing security risks and the presence of military naval vessels have made it difficult to return to normal life.
