Kyauktaw Twsp man severely injured in landmine explosion

A local man from Wethmine village in Arakan State’s Kyauktaw Township is reportedly receiving medical treatment after he was severely injured in a landmine blast on Friday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as U Than Sein Maung, in his 40s. He sustained serious injuries to his legs after stepping on the landmine about one mile from Wethmine village while searching for his cattle, said U Win Tin, a relative of the victim.

“He stepped on a landmine near a railway track while searching for his cattle. He lost his right leg in the landmine blast but his condition is considered not life-threatening,” U Win Tin told DMG. “He used to pass this railway track, which is close to the Myanmar military’s Light Infantry Battalion No. 375. I am sorry to hear about his tragedy.”

U Than Sein Maung has reportedly been admitted to Kyauktaw Hospital for medical treatment.

Two women from a camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Paletwa Township, Chin State, were injured in a landmine blast on Monday morning. An IDP was killed and another injured in a landmine explosion near Sanyin village in Arakan State’s Myebon Township on June 14.

Over the course of some two years of fighting between Myanmar’s military and the Arakan Army from late 2018 to November 2020, dozens of people were killed and scores more were injured in landmine and explosive remnant of war (ERW) encounters.
