Eight residents of Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State, who were arrested on suspicion of having ties to the Arakan Army (AA) during the 2022 fighting, were sentenced to three years in prison under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code on November 23, according to family members and lawyers.
The Kyaukphyu Township Court sentenced U Win Naing, U Tin Nyunt, U Soe Win Naing and U Ba Than from downtown wards in Kyaukphyu; U Saw Wunna Kyaw and U Tun Tun Kyaw from Muywin Village; and U Tin Myo Tun from Sanae town to three years in prison under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code on Thursday.
“We were not informed about the court hearing. We found out about the court hearing only after investigating in our own way. They are being transferred to the prison,” said Daw Nilar Soe, the wife of U Soe Win Naing.
The eight men were arrested in August 2022 and the final verdict was delivered after they faced trial for more than a year.
“The judge delivered a final verdict amid renewed, escalating hostilities in Arakan State. Family members of the accused were not informed about the court hearing. I doubt that they will be harmed in prison,” said Ma Moe Moe Hsan, the wife of U Win Naing.
The regime detained around 40 people during the 2022 fighting and some were released under a junta amnesty. About 15 people were charged under the Unlawful Associations Act, or with incitement under Section 505 of the Penal Code.
