Regime reinforces Kyaukphyu front after heavy casualties

Facing heavy casualties on the intense battlefields of Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State, the military regime has deployed hundreds of reinforcements in an effort to strengthen its positions, according to local sources.

Since August 2, the junta has been sending reinforcements through Light Infantry Battalions (LIB) No. 542 and No. 543 towards Police Battalion No. 32 and Malakyun Village, where major Chinese development projects are located.

"There are at least two military trucks a day, each carrying no fewer than 20 soldiers. They split up and head towards Malakyun Village and the police battalion. It appears they are sending personnel to replace troops who suffered heavy casualties," a Kyaukphyu resident said.

In addition to using overland routes from local bases to transport troops and weapons, the regime is using navy vessels to reinforce Danyawadi Naval Base and Taung Maw Gyi naval station.

The reinforcements are mainly transported by naval vessels from Ayeyarwady Region, while Y-12 aircraft occasionally fly into Kyaukphyu Airport to deliver additional troops.

Another local resident said: "Recently, junta navy ships have been docking in town and at the jetty in Ngalapwe Ward. Personnel brought in by ship are distributed among LIB No. 34, LIB No. 542 and LIB No. 543. From these battalions, they are sent to the front lines in waves whenever needed."

Since July 2025, the military regime has launched continuous, high-intensity offensives to regain control of areas held by the Arakan Army in Kyaukphyu, suffering frequent casualties, desertions and surrenders.

Clashes remain intense around Sanae Town, as well as Minpyin, Chaungmyaung and Zaichaung villages in Kyaukphyu Township. The junta's reliance on human-wave tactics has resulted in heavy casualties among its troops.

"Since fighting began in Kyaukphyu, the junta has reinforced its troops almost every month. Sometimes they send nearly 1,000 soldiers by ship. They suffer heavy losses at the hands of the Arakan Army, and then the regime replaces those losses by sending more recruits to the front lines," a person familiar with the military situation said.

During the Kyaukphyu offensive that began on February 20, 2025, the Arakan Army advanced to within six miles of Kyaukphyu Town and came within artillery range of LIB No. 542 and LIB No. 543.

Although the Arakan Army withdrew from some of its controlled territories starting in July 2025, it launched counter-offensives in early 2026 and regained control of several areas.
