The Arakkha Army (AA) reportedly took control of the military’s Tawhein tactical command base near Kazukaing Village in Ann Township on Saturday.
The AA has launched attacks on the Tawhein tactical command base since March 24, with the military responding to the AA’s offensive manoeuvres with heavy weapons including airstrikes.
“The AA reportedly attacked the Tawhein tactical command base with drones. Some junta soldiers managed to flee and some were captured alive by the AA,” said a reliable source.
Under the No. 5 Military Operations Command, the Tawhein tactical command base, which is home to more than 600 junta soldiers, is located near the Yangon-Sittwe road about 20 miles west of Ann.
“The AA seized about 75 percent of the Tawhein tactical command base during this week and took control of the base on April 27. We usually hear gunfire in the morning or in the evening. We didn’t hear the sound of small arms fire this morning,” said a local resident in Ann.
The AA has been stepping up assaults on the military’s Tawhein tactical command base, Swaechaung tactical command base, Point 299 and other military camps in Ann Township simultaneously since March 24.
Ann Township is home to the military’s Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) Nos. 371, 372 and 373, engineering battalions, medical corps and supply and transport battalions.
Since renewed fighting kicked off in November, the AA has so far seized control of eight townships in Arakan State as well as Paletwa Township in neighbouring Chin State. Fighting between the military and AA is intensifying in Maungdaw, Ann and Thandwe townships.
