Two detained Arakkha Army (AA) fighters were tortured by the Chin National Front/Chin National Army (CNF/CNA) and forced to confess to false statements, according to U Khaing Thukha, spokesman for the Arakanese ethnic armed group.
A video file reportedly showing two AA fighters confessing to using drugs and raping women went viral on social media on August 1.
Describing the video as propaganda, U Khaing Thukha said the AA soldiers were tortured and forced to speak as coerced, and that the AA did not do injustice to any Chin people.
“We have received from reliable sources that two AA soldiers were subjected to various tortures by the CNF/CNA. The CNF/CNA asked the two AA soldiers to testify as they wished,” he said.
The Chin Brotherhood Alliance (CBA) and its allied forces seized control of Matupi town on June 29. The two AA soldiers were reportedly arrested two days after the capture of Matupi town while going unarmed on duty to a village when they took the wrong road and went to a village where CNF troops were stationed.
The AA said the two captured AA soldiers were not prisoners of war as the CNF has claimed.
“They weren’t captured while fighting on the battlefield. When they went on duty unarmed, they were unjustly arrested by the CNF,” U Khaing Thukha added, warning that the CNF must be responsible and accountable for its actions.
DMG continues to attempt to contact CNF officials regarding the AA spokesman’s comments.
The Chin Council led by the CNF/CNA said on July 29 that the AA should stop interfering in the political affairs of Chin State and the Chin people as soon as possible.
The Chin Brotherhood Alliance (CBA) announced on August 3 that the CNF’s views and actions regarding the AA are not representative of the Chin people and are harming the unity of the local and foreign ethnic brothers and the Chin nation who are actively participating in the revolution.
The CBA has said that the CNF’s views and actions toward the AA are acts of inciting hatred between Chin and Arakanese peoples, and advised that the two detained AA soldiers should be released as soon as possible and that such actions between revolutionary organisations should not be repeated.
The CBA in cooperation with allied forces including the AA have seized several junta bases and military camps in Chin State.
