Heavy fighting is ongoing between the military regime and an Arakan Army (AA)-led coalition in Laymyethna and Thabaung townships, with regime forces conducting repeated airstrikes, according to military sources.

Thelnukon, Lelkhongyi and Sawpyar villages in Laymyethna Township, and Thabaunglay Village in Thabaung Township, have seen intense clashes, with junta troops reportedly relying heavily on air support.

“There are ongoing clashes between the two sides in Thelnukon, Lelkhongyi and Sawpyar villages in Laymyethna Township on the Pathein–Monywa highway. The military regime is also carrying out airstrikes. The regime is launching offensives in Thabaunglay Village in Thabaung Township, so clashes are still ongoing. The military is regrouping and launching offensives due to heavy losses,” a military source said.

The AA said in November that the regime was engaging with Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) Nos. 5, 6, 10, 35 and 80 under Light Infantry Division 66, and LIB Nos. 63 and 271 under the Pathein-based Western Command.

As fighting escalated in Laymyethna Township, some junta officers and troops were injured, prompting an airstrike on the Lelkhongyi Village monastery on December 5. The junta artillery regiment in Mrauksan Village was also reportedly providing heavy weapons support.

“I heard from people close to them that many officers and soldiers of the military regime are being killed in Laymyethna Township. Yesterday, the military conducted an airstrike on the Lelkhongyi Village monastery, damaging the buildings. The entire village is taking shelter, so there were no casualties. The artillery battalion in Mrauksan Village is also frequently firing heavy weapons at the villages where clashes are taking place,” said a man in his 30s.

In Ayeyarwady Region, the AA and local resistance forces are conducting military operations in Laymyethna, Yekyi, Thabaung, Pathein and Ingapu townships, and have seized at least 10 junta camps.

Locals say the regime is also arresting young people in townships for militia training to bolster its defences against attacks by revolutionary forces.
