The Arakan Army (AA) has continued to attack two junta bases housing tactical commands in Chin State’s Paletwa Township, the Brotherhood Alliance said on Wednesday.
The AA launched attacks on Taroneain tactical command and Nonebu tactical command on Tuesday morning. The fighting was fierce as the regime defended its territorial holdings with air and artillery support.
Junta media on Thursday reported that large numbers of AA troops repeatedly attacked the Taroneain base, but withdrew after suffering heavy casualties.
“The enemy [AA] withdrew with heavy casualties thanks to strong defence of the Taroneain base. [Myanmar military troops] pursued them in the surrounding areas,” junta spokesman Major-General Zaw Min Tun was quoted as saying.
The regime has described the Taroneain base as crucial for India-funded projects in Arakan State, accusing the AA itself of therefore “destroying” the development of Arakan State.
Fierce fighting has played out this week nonetheless, with Myanmar’s military regime heavily reliant on air attacks, the Brotherhood Alliance said on Wednesday.
“The enemy [Myanmar military] is also deliberately firing at places that have no fighting,” the Alliance said in a statement.
Hundreds if not thousands of local residents have been forced from their homes by the fighting in Paletwa. Four residents were reportedly killed and five others were injured in Taroneain Village by junta air and artillery strikes.
