Junta troops stationed on Mount Thin Kyeik, near Mrauk-U town in Arakan State, have surrendered to the Arakan Army (AA) following an AA assault, according to residents.
There were reports that 140 junta soldiers were stationed there and that some 100 have surrendered to the AA, while the rest fled into Mrauk-U. DMG could not independently verify those reports.
“The mountain has been besieged by the AA, and the Myanmar military soldiers have surrendered probably because they have run out of food supplies,” said a resident.
Another resident said: “I have heard soldiers have surrendered. But I don’t know how many have surrendered. There are no junta soldiers on Mount Thin Kyeik now.”
There were also reports that junta military and AA officials held talks in Mrauk-U Township, and that the AA allowed junta soldiers deployed on Mount Thin Kyeik to leave without their arms.
Myanmar military troops have been stationed on Mount Thin Kyeik since 2019. DMG was unable to contact AA spokesman U Khaing Thukha for comment at press time.
The AA has been attacking junta positions in Mrauk-U Township since December 24. The AA seized Mrauk-U Township police station on December 26, and Myaungbwe Police Station on December 30.
The junta’s Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 377 and 540 based in Mrauk-U fired artillery shells on Monday, said residents.
