Bahrain has expressed interest in importing avocados from Myanmar, according to the Myanmar Avocado Producer and Exporter Association (MAVO).

A MAVO official said that samples of avocados and avocado oil would be sent to Bahrain for testing in mid-October.

“Bahrain will check the quality of Myanmar avocados and buy if satisfied. Then we will know how many tonnes of avocados [to export to Bahrain] from Myanmar,” said U Kyaw Soe Min, secretary of the MAVO.

“Bahrain has offered to buy avocados from Myanmar, but since we don’t know how much they will buy, we cannot say how much profit we will make. If foreign countries buy avocados from Myanmar, we have to prepare warehousing and processing parts,” said an avocado merchant in Taunggyi.

Myanmar avocados are currently bought by Malaysia and last year, between 30 and 40 tonnes of avocados were exported to Malaysia, according to MAVO’s figures.

India, meanwhile, has offered to buy 1,000 tonnes of avocados from Myanmar, the MAVO has said.

Hass, a popular avocado variety, will be exported to India beginning in January 2024, at market price. Avocado varieties produced in southern Shan State, northern Shan State and Pyin Oo Lwin will be exported.

Myanmar’s avocado consumption is about 3,000 tonnes annually. At the beginning of this year, the price of avocados was between K6,000 and K10,000 per kilogramme.

There are about 25,000 acres of avocado farms in Myanmar. Avocado is mainly grown in Shan State, Pyin Oo Lwin and Mogok in Mandalay Region, Chin and Kachin states, and the Naga hill country. Between 5,000 and 10,000 tonnes of avocados are produced annually.
