Enrollment for the academic year 2024-2025 has begun at basic education schools in junta-held townships in Arakan State, according to local people.
School enrollment for the year 2024-2025 began May 23 in Arakan State’s Sittwe, Taungup, Ann, Manaung, Gwa, Kyaukphyu and Thandwe townships.
“Schools in our town began accepting school enrollment on May 23. I saw some students enrolled in schools in our town today,” said a local woman in Taungup.
As basic education schools will open for the coming academic year on June 3, the enrollment period has been set from May 23 to June 2, the regime said.
Despite the regime accepting enrollments, most students are not enrolling due to security concerns as well as being displaced by fighting between the junta and Arakkha Army (AA), according to local residents.
“Only a few students enrolled in schools and many students were displaced by the fighting. Parents are worried about their children’s safety due to the ongoing fighting in Arakan State,” said a junior assistant teacher in Ann.
Parents and students are concerned for their safety due to the ongoing fighting between the military and AA in Maungdaw, Ann and Thandwe townships.
Fighting has been raging in Arakan State for more than six months, with the AA seizing large swaths of territory and effective control of nine townships, as well as Paletwa Township in neighbouring Chin State.
