A deputy battalion commander and a captain of the Myanmar regime were killed in fighting between junta and Arakkha Army (AA) forces in Thandwe Township, Arakan State, on Thursday, a credible source confirmed to DMG.
Major Pyae Phyo Hein, the deputy battalion commander of Infantry Battalion No. 55 based in Ngapali, and Captain Ko Ko Lin were reportedly killed in the recent hostilities.
“The fighting was fierce, and more junta soldiers could have been killed though I don’t know the details,” said the source.
Clashes broke out between junta and AA troops near villages some 10 miles from the Tha Htay Chaung hydropower project in Thandwe Township on Friday morning.
The regime has brought in air and naval support to defend against the AA’s advances.
The fighting has forced more than 3,000 residents from at least six villages in Thandwe Township from their homes, residents said.
“Thandwe town residents have concerns as the fighting has intensified. Some of those who can afford it have even fled to Yangon,” said one Thandwe resident.
Fighting erupted on April 13 in Thandwe Township, opening a new front in the battle for control of Arakan State.
