Earthquake rattles some townships in Arakan State
A moderate earthquake shook Arakan State’s Gwa and Thandwe townships late Wednesday night, according to locals.

A moderate earthquake shook Arakan State’s Gwa and Thandwe townships late Wednesday night, according to locals.
The quake lasted for more than a minute but no damage was reported, said Ko Kyaw Myint Maung, a resident of Gwa Township.
“The quake shook homes and lasted just over a minute. No damage was reported after the earthquake,” he told DMG.
Thandwe Township was similarly quaked, said Ko Tin Tun Aung, a resident of Ngapali town.
A magnitude-5.2 earthquake was recorded 24 miles off the coast of Gwa at 16:43:15 (UTC), according to the U.S. Geological Survey
On August 18, 2019, there was a series of earthquakes in Arakan State with magnitudes ranging from 4.7 to 5.5.
At least three seismic faults in Arakan State have the potential to cause strong, potentially tsunami-triggering earthquakes, warned Dr. Myo Thant, secretary of the Myanmar Earthquake Committee.
Due to the presence of the Mrauk-U, Kaladan and Thahtay Chaung faults in Arakan State, the danger of earthquakes needs to be considered, he added.
Six seismometers have been installed in Arakan State to study seismic activity.
