The Arakkha Army (AA) has reportedly evacuated thousands of local people who were trapped by fighting between Myanmar military and AA forces in Arakan State’s Maungdaw Town and nearby villages in recent days, according to sources on the ground.
The AA evacuated thousands of people including Arakanese, Hindus and Muslims from Maungdaw’s Ward Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, and Latha, Shwezar, Labawzar, Maungnipyin, Kanyintan and Pantawpyin villages.
“The AA has rescued people trapped by fighting in Maungdaw. Thousands of residents in Maungdaw have fled to safer locations. They are safe but face the risk of junta airstrikes. Among the evacuees are Muslims, Arakanese and other ethnic people,” said a Maungdaw resident.
The AA evacuated around 15,000 people from Maungdaw and nearby villages from August 7-14.
The AA has reportedly provided evacuees with shelters, food and healthcare services at the locations where they are now taking refuge.
“The AA evacuated thousands of local people and sent the evacuees to safe locations. The AA also provided evacuees with healthcare services and food items. I would like to urge social organisations to help the evacuees by supplying them with necessary assistance,” said a social activist in Maungdaw.
The AA has previously issued warnings to Maungdaw residents to evacuate the town, but the regime and armed Muslim militiamen did not allow many to escape amid the ongoing fighting.
Clashes have intensified as the AA is currently attacking Border Guard Police Battalion No. 5 in Myo Thu Gyi Ward, on the outskirts of Maungdaw Town.
