The Arakkha Army (AA) seized control of the military's Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 563 in Gwa, Arakan State, on Friday morning, according to sources close to the ethnic armed group.

The AA captured some weapons and soldiers from the military’s LIB No. 563 on the Thandwe-Gwa road and fleeing junta soldiers retreated to LIB No. 562.

“It is true that the AA seized the military’s LIB No. 563 this morning. Some junta soldiers withdrew from LIB No. 563 and joined LIB No. 562. The military’s LIB No. 562 will also be captured by the AA soon,” said a source close to the AA.

The AA continues to attack the military’s LIB No. 562 on the Gwa-Ngathainggyaung road and the fighting is escalating, said a source on the ground.

“The regime suffered heavy casualties because many injured junta soldiers fled in vehicles.  Junta troops on Mt. Yoe fired mortar shells into the scene of fighting in the morning,” the source added.

Fighting between the military and AA has been intensifying along the mountain range near Bawdi Village on the Gwa-Ngathainggyaung road since December 17.

Some homes in downtown Gwa were reduced to ashes due to the regime’s airstrikes and artillery attacks during the fighting.

The battle for control of Gwa Town continues to escalate and a haul of weapons and dead bodies of junta soldiers were seized, the AA said in a statement on December 18.

The AA has seized junta battalions and military camps in Kyeintalin Town and Gwa and the ethnic armed group is currently launching an attack on the military’s LIB No. 562.
