Junta airstrikes kill 22 civilians, injure 66 across Arakan State in July: DMG tally

Military regime airstrikes across Arakan State killed 22 civilians and injured 66 others during July, according to a tally compiled by DMG.

Between July 1 and July 31, the regime carried out repeated airstrikes on Thandwe, Taungup, Gwa, Buthidaung, Maungdaw, Pauktaw and Ponnagyun townships.

According to the data, Thandwe Township recorded seven deaths and 40 injuries; Taungup Township five deaths and 14 injuries; Gwa Township five deaths and three injuries; Maungdaw Township four deaths; Buthidaung Township one death and five injuries; Pauktaw Township two injuries; and Ponnagyun Township two injuries.

Among those killed were four women, 15 men, and three people whose gender could not be identified. The injured included 14 women, 21 men, and 31 people whose gender could not be determined.

The victims included three 3-year-old children, one child just over 1 year old, and three Buddhist monks.

Residents of Thandwe Township said they are living in fear as the military regime continues to carry out daily airstrikes.

As the junta persists with its aerial attacks, civil society organizations in Arakan State are urging residents to take precautions against airstrikes and avoid public gatherings.

"We want residents to dig bomb shelters. Given the rainy season, people should properly reinforce shelters to prevent flooding. When aircraft approach, people should refrain from going outside to watch and should only exit shelters some time after the aircraft have left. Avoiding public gatherings is the safest option under these conditions," said Ko Lin Khaing of the Phyusin Yin Khwin Foundation.

Residents of Arakan State are also calling on the international community and relevant authorities to take effective action to prevent civilian casualties.

"We want the international community to stop the loss of innocent lives. Effective action must be taken against these airstrikes targeting civilians, especially while people are already suffering from flood disasters. Bombing combat zones is understandable, but targeting civilians requires an effective response," a female human rights activist said.

Human rights advocates said decisive action is needed against the military regime for deliberately targeting civilians in violation of human rights.

According to DMG data, junta airstrikes across Arakan State killed 13 civilians and injured 30 others in June.
