A junta jet fighter dropped three 500-pound bombs on Barhtalay and Ngwartinkote villages in Rathedaung Township, Rakhine State, on Saturday morning, killing five civilians and injuring four others. Both villages are under the control of the Arakan Army (AA).
"A junta jet fighter bombed Barhtalay at around 10 a.m. this morning and then bombed Ngwartinkote shortly after. The airstrikes caused significant damage and people were killed," said a local man from Rathedaung.
Two 500-pound bombs struck Barhtalay Village at 10:02 a.m., killing three civilians and wounding four. Three minutes later, at 10:05 a.m., another junta jet fighter dropped a 500-pound bomb on Ngwartinkote Village, killing two civilians.
DMG is still investigating details of the casualties.
On November 8, the military bombed Kyaukthanchay Village in neighbouring Ponnagyun Township, killing two locals and injuring one.
Residents of nearby villages including Lamonetaing, Laigwin, Laykhwasone, Nyaungbinhla, Sankar, Tun Yawai, Aleywa and Sabarhtar are reportedly fearful.
"The villagers are worried and don't know where to hide. The military also bombed Kyeintha and Kyaukthanchay in recent days, so people are even more anxious now," said a Rathedaung resident.
The military has been conducting frequent airstrikes on townships controlled by the AA, resulting in rising civilian casualties, including children, and widespread fear among residents.
After the AA captured Rathedaung Township on March 17, 2024, the military has repeatedly carried out aerial attacks. On May 13, a junta jet fighter bombed Tun Yawai Village in Rathedaung, killing 12 civilians and injuring at least 23 others.
