The military junta has issued a statement claiming that 28 male combatants from the Arakan Army (AA), the People's Defence Force (PDF) and the People's Liberation Force (PLF) surrendered with weapons in Ayeyarwady Region.

The announcement came amid intensifying clashes around Sittwe and reports that two junta warships had been sunk.

The junta's October 28 statement said 28 resistance members, comprising 15 alleged AA members, 12 alleged PDF members and one alleged PLF member, had surrendered with arms and ammunition and been handed over to their guardians at Southwestern Regional Military Command in Pathein.

The junta claimed that the 15 alleged AA members included seven from Thandwe Township and one each from Pauktaw, Mrauk-U and Minbya townships in Arakan State.

The junta further claimed that the 12 alleged PDF members included six from Labutta Township and one each from Kyangin and Nyaungdon townships in Ayeyarwady Region, Kyaukkyi Township in Bago Region, and Myaing Township in Magway Region. The group also reportedly included one PLF member from Danubyu Township in Ayeyarwady Region.

Regime media reported that automatic MA-series rifles and assorted ammunition brought by the individuals were handed over to Brigadier-General Aung Kyaw Khaing, commander of Southwestern Regional Military Command, and other officials.

DMG is seeking comment from Arakan Army spokesperson U Khaing Thukha regarding the junta's claims that AA members surrendered.

Fierce clashes between the military junta and the Arakan Army are ongoing in Sittwe and Kyaukphyu townships in Arakan State.

In recent days, Arakan Army forces attacked three junta naval vessels in the Kaladan River, reportedly sinking two and severely damaging the third, according to military sources.

Military observers said the junta's announcements about resistance members surrendering in Ayeyarwady Region may be intended to divert attention from its reported naval and territorial losses in Arakan State.
