Junta deploys hundreds of troops to Mindon for Arakan offensive

The military junta has been deploying hundreds of troops to Mindon Township, Magway Region, in recent days to launch an offensive toward Taungup Township in Arakan State, according to military sources.

Around 2,000 troops from Light Infantry Division 55 and junta-backed militias arrived at the junta's Weapons Factory No. 12 in Thayet Township on August 22. From there, a convoy carrying about 300 troops reached Mindon Town on August 23.

"The regime is sending hundreds of reinforcements to Mindon. They are particularly likely to launch a renewed offensive along the Mindon-Maei route over the Arakan mountain range. The regime attempted to send columns in June and early July, but joint forces led by the Arakan Army crushed them, forcing junta troops to retreat to Mindon Town. Now the regime is regrouping and preparing to advance again," a Mindon-based military source said.

The military junta is attempting to enter Arakan State from Magway, Bago and Ayeyarwady regions, as well as Chin State. In Magway Region, the regime is attempting to advance through two routes via the Nat Yay Kan tactical hilltop base and Mindon.

Mindon borders Taungup Township, and the military junta is attempting to enter Arakan State through mountain passes.

"The military junta is trying various ways to push into Arakan State. With these attempts, clashes between the military and the Arakan Army could continue to intensify. The military appears to be throwing in all available forces to regain ground lost in Arakan State," a military analyst in Arakan State said.

Despite attempting multiple routes into Arakan State, the military junta has been unable to break through due to counteroffensives by the Arakan Army.

Facing ground losses and casualties, the military junta has relied on airstrikes targeting civilian-populated areas across Arakan State.
