A burglary took place at a house in Kanpai ward, Taungup Township, and gold items worth more than K40 million ($24,000) were stolen, according to the victim’s family members.
One family member said a grocery store was opened in the basement of the house, and a man pretending to be a customer went upstairs and stole the gold jewelry.
“A man on a motorcycle pretended to be a customer and stopped in front of the store. He then entered the cargo area, climbed the stairs, and stole the goods upstairs. It took about six minutes to steal jewelry worth over 40 million kyats,” said Ko Kyaw Htet Aung, the son of the homeowner.
He said the thief wore a black hat and mask, and stole the gold items from an upstairs closet.
It is not yet known who stole the jewellery, but arrangements are being made to file a complaint with the Taungup Township police station.
The matter is being investigated but the owners had not filed a case as of Monday afternoon, said a police officer on duty at the Taungup Township police station.
“The house owners have not filed a case yet. They said they would file a case after compiling a list of the missing gold items. We are investigating the case,” the officer added.
Motorcycle theft is also a frequent occurrence in Arakan State’s Taungup Township, according to locals.
