A junta jet fighter launched airstrikes on the Moe Pyinnyar Dana Philanthropic Association’s training school near Shwekunsan Village, part of Arakan State’s Taungup Township, on Friday.
The jet fighter carried out three airstrikes on the Moe Pyinnyar Dana Philanthropic Association’s training school at around 3 a.m. on August 16, according to residents in Taungup.
“A junta jet fighter conducted airstrikes early this morning. Two bombs dropped by the junta jet fighter fell in the compound of the Moe Pyinnyar Dana Philanthropic Association’s training school and three bombs landed at nearby locations. I don’t know the number of civilian casualties,” said a resident of Taungup.
The Moe Pyinnyar Dana Philanthropic Association’s training school, located about nine miles north of Taungup, offers impoverished youths free vocational training, including computer classes and English-language workshops.
There were more than 100 students at the training school when the junta jet fighter launched its aerial assault.
At present, there is no fighting in Taungup Township, and residents say Friday’s attack clearly targeted civilians.
“The junta airstrike is a targeted attack on civilians as there is no fighting in Taungup Township. As long as the regime continues to target people like this, it will always lose to the resistance forces,” said a young man in Taungup.
A military Y-12 jet fighter dropped two bombs on the hills near Aungmingalar Village, located between Sarpyin and Kamar villages in Taungup Township, at around 4 p.m. on August 15.
Five people were reportedly killed in a junta airstrike targeting Kanseik Village on Pantin Island in the west of Taungup Township on June 18.
There has not been fighting between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) in Taungup Township since June 15. Junta soldiers at military camps have nonetheless been firing mortar shells into residential areas since then and have boosted their defences in downtown Taungup.
Locals are worried about their safety as the regime carries out airstrikes amid military tension with the ethnic armed group.
