Myanmar’s military regime abducted a boatman from his home in Ngalapwe Ward, Kyaukphyu Township, in Arakan State on Thursday, according to local people.
U Maung Hla Khin, the 56-year-old boatman, was taken from his home by regime soldiers on April 25.
“Five junta soldiers in plainclothes in a civilian vehicle took U Maung Hla Kyi from his home,” said a resident of Kyaukphyu.
The reason for the arrest remains unknown and U Maung Hla Khin is currently being held at the military’s Light Infantry Battalion No. 34 in Kyaukphyu.
Junta soldiers reportedly abducted a member of the local administrative body and a resident from their home in Gonechein Village in Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State, on the night of April 19, and they have not yet been released.
“The military regime has been arresting innocent people for various reasons. Of those who were arrested, almost no one was released. We feel insecure in the junta-held area. We have difficulties fleeing to safer locations,” said a local woman in Kyaukphyu.
The regime has detained at least 20 civilians in Kyaukphyu Township since January of this year. Family members are worried about the safety of detainees who have not been released yet and whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Clashes between the military and Arakha Army (AA) are reported in Kyaukphyu Township, with military tensions between the two sides running high.
