Amid fierce fighting between junta troops and the Arakkha Army (AA) in Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, more than 100 junta soldiers from Border Guard Police Battalion Nos. 2 and 4 in Mawyawaddy and 4thMile crossed the Naf River and fled into Bangladesh on Saturday.
“The fighting is fierce as the AA is attacking those positions. Junta jets are bombing every day. Over 100 troops from those two outposts have fled,” said a source.
Earlier this month, 132 border guard police also fled into Bangladesh following AA attacks.
A political analyst said: “In Maungdaw, the regime is severely suffering from the AA’s attacks. When they couldn't repulse attacks, they crossed the border and fled into other countries, not just Bangladesh. No neighbouring country will respect the capacity and dignity of the regime.”
More than 750 junta soldiers and border guard police have fled into Bangladesh on several occasions in recent months following clashes near the border in Maungdaw.
Bangladeshi authorities transferred 288 junta soldiers back to the regime on April 25. On February 15, 330 border guard police and their family members were returned from Bangladesh to the regime.
The AA has seized the Border Guard Police Battalion 1 headquarters in Kyee Kan Pyin, Border Guard Police Battalion 7 in Kyein Chaung, and Border Guard Police Battalion 10 in Hla Poe Kaung. It has stepped up attacks on Border Guard Police Battalion Nos. 2, 4, 5, 6 and 9.
