The Maungdaw District administrator and some departmental staff have fled Maungdaw amid fighting between Myanmar’s military regime and the Arakan Army (AA), sources told DMG.
District administrator U Nay Oo fled on Friday morning along with some staff.
“They fled yesterday. I heard they also took some weapons with them. I don’t know where they fled,” said the source.
Fighting has been raging in Maungdaw District as the AA is attacking to seize junta positions. Maungdaw District consists of Maungdaw and Buthidaung townships.
While many Maungdaw town residents have fled out of concern for their safety, some remain in the town due to various difficulties.
“We fled some five days ago. We dare not stay in the town as the regime has tightened security and reinforced their troops. Fighting is also taking place in rural areas of Maungdaw,” said a woman who fled Maungdaw.
The AA has seized nine towns and hundreds of junta positions since renewed fighting broke out in November.
Many junta soldiers, police and department staff have deserted during the latest hostilities. The chief of the police station in Taungup town is believed to have deserted on April 3.
