Fighting is reportedly intensifying as Myanmar’s military regime launches a major offensive against Gotegyi camp in Ngaphe Township, Magway Region, which is occupied by a coalition force led by the Arakan Army (AA).
Gotegyi camp, a forward outpost of the Nat Yay Kan tactical base on the border of Arakan State and Magway Region, was captured by AA-led forces in September. In recent days, the military regime has mounted an offensive involving ground assaults, air strikes and artillery fire.
“The fighting is very intense. The military regime is using force and attacking, while the AA and allied forces are resisting fiercely. The situation remains fluid, and it is not yet possible to say for sure,” a military source said.
Junta-aligned Telegram channels claim the military regime has regained control of Gotegyi camp and Gotegyi Village. However, sources on the ground say fighting remains fierce.
Gotegyi camp, where clashes are ongoing, is located about three miles from the Nat Yay Kan tactical base.
A joint force led by the AA has captured at least five outposts linked to the Nat Yay Kan tactical base and is surrounding the junta-held base, according to sources.
Military observers say the Nat Yay Kan air defence base is of critical importance to the military regime, making its reinforcement and defence imperative.
“The scale of force being used shows how important the Nat Yay Kan base is to the military regime,” said a young man monitoring military developments in Arakan State. “Light Infantry Division 99 and Military Operations Commands 14 and 17 have been deployed. They cannot afford to lose the base, as it is a gateway between Arakan State and Magway Region and is crucial for exerting military pressure on Arakan State and protecting weapons factories in Magway Region.”
Military sources said the battle for control of Gotegyi camp is being reinforced by artillery support from Artillery Battalion No. 905, based in Padan Village.
Nat Yay Kan base is a hilltop installation located in the Arakan Mountains on the border of Arakan State and Magway Region and houses a national air defence facility.
The Arakan Army and allied forces are also conducting military operations simultaneously in Magway, Bago and Ayeyarwady regions, in addition to the Arakan front.
