A member of the Student Armed Force (SAF), which is fighting alongside the Arakkha Army (AA) in Arakan State's Ann Township, has died on the battlefield, according to the anti-regime group.

The resistance fighter died during the attack on the military's Western Command at around 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The SAF said in a statement that the group was saddened that "the member had sacrificed his life while bravely serving revolutionary duties alongside comrades to liberate the oppressed people."

The SAF vows to fight until the revolution succeeds and build a new nation, reads the statement.

The SAF joined the AA in fighting against the Taw Hein Taung hilltop tactical command in Ann Township. The AA has also provided military assistance to revolutionary organisations in Magwe and Sagaing regions.

Fighting has been raging near the Western Command headquarters in Ann, with the regime airdropping military equipment and food supplies to its troops in the heavily fortified town.

Military analysts predict fierce fighting for control of Ann due to its importance for the regime.

"The fighting is important for the regime politically, economically and militarily. It is also important for the dignity of the regime. If the AA can take control of the town, it can trigger huge political and military changes. So, the fighting could be fiercer than it was in any other town," said an analyst monitoring the situation in Arakan State.

Apart from the Western Command, Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 371, 372 and 373, a general engineering unit, a battlefield engineering unit, a medical corps and other combat support units are based in Ann.
