Former State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to an additional three years in prison by a special court in the military-ruled nation on Wednesday, according to sources close to the court.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was accused of receiving $550,000 in bribes from businessman Maung Weik for her Daw Khin Kyi Foundation. The military junta indicted Daw Aung San Suu Kyi under Article 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law last January, delivering its verdict in that case on Wednesday.
“The court sentenced Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to three years in prison over the military junta’s allegations that she accepted more than US$550,000 in bribes from businessmen U Maung Weik,” the source added.
Charged with accepting bribes, a court found the 77-year-old guilty on two counts of corruption and sentenced her to three years in jail on each count, according to a lawyer in the know.
“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi received three-year jail sentences on two charges, to be served concurrently,” the lawyer said.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has denied the charges and is expected to appeal. A month after the military seized power from her government in February 2021, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was charged with 19 counts.
This is the pro-democracy icon’s 14thconviction, bringing her prison term total to 26 years since the military overthrew the NLD government led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi last year.
