An elderly woman was killed when an artillery shell exploded in Mingyi village, part of Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, on August 27, according to the village administrator.

The victim has been identified as Daw May Tha Sein, a woman in her 60s. She was killed by shrapnel while inside her home on Saturday morning, said U Aung Kyaw Thein, the village administrator.

“She was killed in the shelling at about 9 a.m. There was no fighting when the artillery landed in the village. The artillery shell was fired from the side of Kyeinchaung village and no one else was injured,” the village administrator told DMG.

“Her body was placed in her home and all villagers were sheltering at the village’s monastery. All the villagers are sheltering at the monastery because they are afraid that something will happen if more artillery shells land,” he added.

There are more than 300 people from about 80 households in the village.

Hundreds of locals were forced to flee after a clash broke out between the Myanmar military and Arakan Army at a Border Guard Force outpost near Khamaungseik village in Maungdaw Township on Friday.

Many people have been newly displaced in Rathedaung, Maungdaw and Chin State’s Paletwa townships due to escalating hostilities between Myanmar’s military regime and the AA since early this month.
