Two teenage boys from Udaung Village, part of Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, were injured in a junta artillery attack on Wednesday evening.
The two boys have been identified as Maung Aung Min Hein, 14, and Maung Zaw Lin Hein, 13. A Myanmar Navy vessel in the Bay of Bengal near Kyaukpandu Beach fired at five boys when they were returning home after fishing on December 18.
“A Myanmar Navy ship fired mortar shells at five teenage boys returning home from fishing near Kyaukpandu Village, injuring two of them,” said a local resident.
Maung Aung Min Hein sustained shrapnel wounds to his right thigh and Maung Zaw Lin Hein suffered shrapnel wounds to his right hip and left ear. The two boys are being treated at a nearby hospital.
The Arakkha Army (AA) claimed complete control of Maungdaw Township on December 8, but two Myanmar Navy vessels operating in the Bay of Bengal often fire mortar shells into residential areas.
“There are two Myanmar Navy vessels in the Bay of Bengal. We hear the sounds of heavy weapons on a daily basis,” said a local man in Maungdaw.
Some homes in Shwezar Village were burned to the ground after artillery shells fired by the Myanmar Navy landed and exploded in the village on December 17.
Civilian casualties continue to rise due to junta airstrikes that have often targeted residential areas and other civilian infrastructure in towns held by the AA in Arakan State.
