A resident of Kaingshae Ward in Taungup, Arakan State, was robbed and killed near Taungup University on Sunday, according to people close to the family.
The victim has been identified as 45-year-old U San Thein Aung, who was killed while returning home from his chicken farm near Meechaunghtoe Village. He was found dead with stab wounds at around 10 p.m. on July 30.
“When U San Thein Aung was late to return home, family members and the ward administrator found him dead. He was killed while returning home from his chicken farm near Meechaunghtoe Village and was found dead near a security checkpoint near Taungup University with stab wounds. His motorbike and mobile phone were stolen,” said a relative of the victim.
The body of the deceased was sent to Taungup Hospital morgue. A case under Section 330 of the Penal Code has been opened at the Taungup Myoma police station regarding the death, said Police Captain San Nyunt.
“At the moment, the police are still trying to identify the culprit as soon as possible,” the police officer added.
The apparent murder came just days after one of two men who allegedly robbed a gold shop using a fake gun in Taungup’s Gutar Ward was arrested. Wearing masks and helmets, the alleged perpetrators robbed the Shwe Pwint Eaint gold shop on the Taungup-Pandaung road on July 27, holding up the store with a fake gun.
A town elder said local authorities should increase security due to the recent, high-profile crimes in Taungup Township.
“The increase in robberies and murders in Taungup Township these days is due to the economic crisis and the rise of drug users. Local people are worried and the local security forces should increase their security operations,” he added.
