New power plant in Kyaukphyu Twsp to supply national grid

The junta-controlled Ministry of Electricity and Energy said on Sunday that a new gas-fired power plant with a capacity of 150 megawatts (MW) in Arakan State’s Kyaukphyu Township is set to run at full capacity by June, supplying the national grid.

The power plant has been operating on a trial basis since February 10, supplying 60 MW to the national grid, and the ministry is working to get the plant running at its full capacity, according to the announcement.

The regime has blamed attacks by resistance groups on electricity pylons for recent power outages. Meanwhile, increased gas prices have also forced some liquefied natural gas-run power plants to suspend operations, resulting in a decline in power supply, said the ministry.

The ministry said gas-fired power plants are supplying 1,455 MW daily using natural gas from offshore projects including Yadana, Zawtika and Shwe, as well as onshore gas fields. The Shwe project alone provides 130 cubic million feet of gas per day to help supply 668 MW, it added.

The ministry said that there will be rolling blackouts while it is carrying out pipework to transport gas from two new fields in the Shwe gas project area to the power plant.
