Fighting is reportedly intense as Myanmar's military regime launches offensives against areas controlled by the Arakan Army (AA) and allied resistance forces in Laymyethna Township, Ayeyarwady Region.
The regime has been attacking Sawpyar, Chingin and Thelnugon villages in Laymyethna Township since January 2, according to local residents.
"The military regime is trying to regain control of some villages along the Pathein-Monywa road," said a local man. "It is conducting a ground offensive on Sawpyar, Chingin and Thelnugon villages, and the sounds of heavy and small-arms fire can be heard even in the urban area. Fighting has resumed since early this month as the road is controlled by the revolutionary forces."
Military sources said regime troops are based in villages along the western bank of the Ngawun River and are providing heavy artillery support from Artillery Battalion No. 344, based in Yekyi Township.
Another Laymyethna resident said the regime is attempting to retake parts of the Pathein-Monywa road after losing control, possibly in preparation for elections.
"The military regime has scheduled a third round of elections in Laymyethna and Yekyi. It may be trying to regain control of the Pathein-Monywa road and the entire foothills of the Arakan mountain range, which it has lost," the resident said. "However, I hear that its offensives have only been met with a series of indiscriminate retreats."
Locals also said fighting has resumed since December between the Myanmar military and a coalition force led by the Arakan Army in neighbouring Thabaung Township.
In Ayeyarwady Region, the Arakan Army and local anti-regime forces are conducting joint operations, with clashes reported in Laymyethna, Yekyi, Thabaung, Pathein and Ingapu townships.
