Fierce clashes are ongoing in Kanpetlet Township, southern Chin State, where regime forces are launching an offensive, and junta troops have reportedly torched and destroyed homes near Kanpetlet Town.
Clashes are taking place near the 6-mile area outside Kanpetlet Town, where junta troops are reportedly stationed inside a pine forest.
“Junta soldiers have been torching homes near the 6-mile area and Kanpetlet. The exact extent of the damage is not yet known. Furthermore, because the regime is conducting airstrikes, civilians have had to flee to safer areas,” said a person familiar with the situation in Kanpetlet.
The regime has also been carrying out airstrikes on locations within and around Kanpetlet Town using jet fighters. On May 21, the military conducted additional air attacks near the town.
“The regime provided air support and bombed the town. However, the ground columns have not yet been able to advance. It is estimated that the clashes will continue to intensify,” the source added.
As regime forces are positioned close to Kanpetlet Town and could attempt to enter at any time, local residents have been urged to remain vigilant regarding airstrikes and renewed fighting.
In the clashes, members of the Chin Brotherhood and allied anti-regime forces in southern Chin State are jointly resisting the regime offensive.
A military observer monitoring the situation in Chin State said: “This battle is strategically important for southern Chin State. The Chin revolutionary allied forces are collectively resisting the regime offensive. Kanpetlet’s geographical position is also a key connection to Arakan State, making it crucial to block and contain the military advance.”
The Chin Brotherhood controls Mindat, Matupi, Kyindwe and Kanpetlet towns in southern Chin State, and the route extends to Paletwa Township, which borders Arakan State.
Paletwa Township is controlled by the Arakan Army, making the area strategically significant for the ethnic Arakanese army as well.
The regime has been reinforcing troops in Saw Township, Magway Region, which borders southern Chin State, and has been launching an offensive since early May.
Kanpetlet Town was captured by the Chin Brotherhood and allied forces in late 2024.
